Mishka  This handsome fellow just turned 5 and after a life lived on a sheep farm he has hard a hard time adjusting to city life. So after three failed placements, we are just going to let him stay where he is for now, where he is doing well with a fully fenced yard and some careful management (ie put in another room) when new dogs or people come in. He tends to love both but gets over-excited so introductions are best put off for a few hours and then handled when the emotions are calmer. Unfortunately he turned out not to have good working instincts either, so the attempt to place him on a highly experienced working farm was also a miss. We love this guy but he is not for just any home.  NS2770
Helen Keller

Helen Keller is 6 years old and has been blind since birth. She is super sweet and affectionate, and navigates very well. It takes her only a day or two to get oriented in a new place. Her coat is soft like mink and we think she is really a cross with a Jack Russel but anyone's guess is as good as ours.

At only 29 pounds, she is a very nice small size. Helen, whose everyday name is Kelly, is reliable in the house but she needs to take Proin which is a chewable tablet, twice a day, to help her keep bladder control. That runs about 27 cents a day. She is fine when left loose when you're out, and is just a little love to have around.

She loves toys, especially anything that squeaks, and especially balls she can carry around and chase and then curl up with.

Helen Keller is fostered near Reading, PA.

Lizzy

Lizzie Girl as she is fondly called, is an adorable 4 year-old black-tri Aussie. Lizzie is on the smaller side, under 16" at the shoulders and only 30-35 pounds. Not only is she cute, but there isn't a person or dog that Lizzie doesn't love. No resource or food guarding, but she does "spook" occasionally (but not thunder, go figure).

Unfortunately, after arriving at her foster’s house, Lizzie began having seizures. She has seen an excellent neurologist and has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and is on phenobarbital. The good news: no seizures since starting the meds! Lizzie is the same sweet and spunky girl, she just needs a family willing to keep her on the medication permanently and keep in regular touch with a vet trained in epilepsy.

In typical Aussie style, she herds the resident kids around the house and is always up for a walk or a car ride. In fact, she LOVES adventures; she's already been to the ballpark 4 times! A baseball fan in the making.  The ideal home for Lizzie would be an active family willing to have another family member along for the ride from time to time. Lizzie loves her people!

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper is about 16 months old and weighs almost 60 pounds. He is VERY energetic and VERY enthusiastic. He loves people and attention. He does well in the car and is decent on a leash (he does some pulling so a good harness and some reinforcement is a must). He is very trainable and smart, but he is good at getting into trouble.

He gets along with most other dogs and loves going to the dog park. His playing can get rough though and he will sometimes bully other dogs if they don't pay attention to him. He would love to have a playmate at home, but absolutely no cats or other small animals due to his high prey drive.

Bradley Cooper has a lot of energy so he will require an active household. If he gets bored, he will make sure everyone knows just how bored he is. Any dog brother/sister should also have a decent amount of energy and love to play! His foster parents think he would do best with a fenced in yard; he loves to run, play fetch, and just hang outside chewing on toys.

Why does this handsome fella keep coming back to New Spirit?? Bradley Cooper has severe separation anxiety. He has been with his foster family on & off since September and has shown significant improvement being left home alone. That being said, there seems to be a long adjustment period going to a new home. It may take months for him to be comfortable enough in his forever home, plus it will require a ton a patience! Being home alone with his foster brother tends to help him feel less anxious, but not a solution to the problem. Crating is not a realistic option because he tends to find his way out of it somehow, which can risk him getting hurt. Bradley Cooper's ideal home would have someone who could be home with him for most, if not all, of the day.

Overall, Bradley Cooper is a very smart and sweet pup. He needs a family who is willing to have the patience and time to spend with him.

Bradley Cooper is fostered in Philadelphia PA.

Shane Pawley

Shane Pawley is a black tri male Australian Shepherd. He is 7 years old and weighs 45 pounds. He is a sweet dog but is somewhat reserved when meeting new people. Once he is comfortable, he will roll on his back for a belly rub.

Shane Pawley prefers to chase cats rather than befriend them. He is also particular with other dogs. His energy and activity level is the perfect blend. He loves going for walks and hikes but also enjoys lounging on the couch. Shane Pawley is a typical velcro aussie meaning he loves to be with people but also does well when left alone. He is not destructive and will entertain himself with his toys. Also, he is not a barker but will bark to alert you if someone comes to the house.

Shane Pawley is housebroken, crate trained, walks well on a leash and does well in a car. He knows basic commands such as sit, lay down, stay and come. Shane Pawley adores his stuffed toys and he enjoys playing fetch. He is good with adults and teens 15 and up but is not recommended for a home with small children. He  has a medium to high prey drive but is easily redirected when on a leash. He displays resource guarding with his food and toys around other dogs but not with people. Shane Pawley does not like skateboards.

Shane Pawley is fostered in Mannington, WV.

Gilli Pepper and Mousse are sisters, 4 years old. They both have a toothy grin. And, they love butt rubs. Pepper is velcro; Mousse is happy to explore on her own. We’d like them to stay together. NS3338  NS3339
Abigail This stunning girl is 12-18 months old and she is fantastic with other dogs.  She's 40 lbs, no tail, with light golden eyes. Abigail has never lived indoors; however, she has adjusted nicely. She even walks into a crate now, and will go there as her safe place.  She rides well in the car, walks nicely on leash, and seems reliable in the house.  We are evaluating her hip for possible surgery before placement.  Abigail is fostered in Collegeville, PA  NS3326
Margaret

Margaret (call name Maggie) is a gorgeous blue-eyed red sable who is about 2 years old. She is smart, energetic, loving and playful, and would so much enjoy spending the rest of her life with you! Maggie loves to go for walks, and plays with other dogs her size and larger. She is in training and just wants to please you. She’ll follow you everywhere, and not let you out of her sight.

Maggie has a strong prey drive, and is reactive to most things that move, including animals, people, bikes, small children, cats, etc. We have been working on reducing her reactiveness, and she is trying so hard to learn! She isn't ready to be off leash, and because of her high energy needs, we do ask for a fenced in yard or a companion who has the time to take her for long walks or runs in an area that has few distractions. Open dog parks are not suitable for her at this time but she would benefit being in a controlled play group with other herding dogs. Maggie would do well in agility, rally or flyball. She has learned a few agility moves already!

In the house, Maggie settles right down. She may bring you a few toys to play with, or quietly chew on a bone. After a day of fun and frolicking, Maggie would like nothing better than to snuggle on the sofa with you and watch a movie. She is reliable in the house. She is crated when the foster mom is gone because she has a touch of separation anxiety, but this could probably be phased out.

Maggie respects the resident elderly Aussie, and plays with the visiting Rottie. She can be aggressive in her play. Maggie does not do well with the smaller resident dog, but that may be because the dog is blind and exhibits unusual dog behaviors. There has been an issue with men in the past that has not been observed at this foster home with the male that is here on weekends.

If you are looking for a dog to take leisurely walks through the neighborhood, then Maggie is probably not for you. If you are looking for a loving, energetic, devoted dog to help you with your household chores and gardening, Maggie is definitely your girl!

Would you give this happy girl a place to call home? Come and visit her near Reading, PA.

She is crate trained, but she is free in her foster home and does perfectly well. Currently Lizzie is fostered in a townhome with a fenced backyard—she doesn't seem bothered by the small surroundings, and she is so smart, she could handle a real or electric fence. And another resident dog who loves to play is preferable for this playful lovebug. Lizzie also loves dazzling you with her smarts and focus, so if you enjoy teaching dogs tricks, she's your girl.   Lizzie is ready to be part of your family!

She is fostered in the Metro DC region.

Roco ADOPTION PENDING

Roco is a 2 year old male black tri Aussie who is about 40 pounds. He is a happy go lucky velcro boy.

He loves to play with balls and toys, and other dogs, but is not crazy, though a medium to high energy Aussie. Cats are fine in his book. He has loved everyone he has met, including kids, but might be a bit much for toddlers. He does pull a bit on leash, as he likes to get where he is going.

Roco has a great recall, and a low prey drive, a good combination for folks without a fence. He will counter surf, and trains his people to keep the counter clean. He may take a while to warm up to some folks, but once he does he is your friend for life.

Roco is fostered in Beaver, PA.  NS3320
Stryder  - ADOPTION PENDING

Stryder is a 5 1/2 year old red merle male aussie. He is as sweet as can be and does not know the word stranger. He is house and crate trained and can be trusted loose in the house.

Stryder is fostered in Bel Air, MD

NS3342.
Azalea

Azalea is a 4 yr. old female aussie. She has just arrived in the mid atlantic region so we are just getting to know her. She is house and crate trained and she rides well in the car.

Azalea can be skittish with sudden movements and noise. She walks well on a leash and gets along with other dogs. Please check back for more updates.

Azalea is fostered in Bel Air MD.

Juniper

Juniper is a seriously sweet adorable 8 month old blue merle mini Australian Shepherd. She weighs a whopping 12 lbs of pure energy and fun. Juniper is crate trained but isn't a fan. She is not completely housebroken but we are working on that. House manners and basic commands? A work in progress. On the positive side she is too small to cause any real damage. She is smart and is trying to learn, but it's so darn boring! Did anyone say play? Ball? Outside? This little girl is all in. A typical Aussie puppy with rocket boosters, this girl is lightening fast and lives to play. Her only off switch at this time is the crate.

Juniper is learning to walk on leash. She zigzags everywhere because she has to check everything out. She loves all people including children and all dogs. They might not love her back because of her desire to play play play. The resident dogs oblige but when they have had enough they let her know and she moves on. Amazingly she isn't a pest. She loves to give sweet butterfly kisses but is too wiggly to cuddle.

Juniper's ideal home is with an active family who has time to train and work with her. They also need to be able to burn off that puppy energy. I'm sure she will calm down as she ages but think she may always be a high energy girl. Another playful dog would be great but isn't a must. A yard with a physical fence is a necessity. She is a flight risk and diligence at doors by all family members is crucial.

Juniper is super fun and keeps you smiling with her silly antics. You just can't have a bad day with her by your side.

Juniper is fostered in Phoenixville, PA

Jelly Belly

Little miss Ellie aka "Jelly Belly" is a very sweet, tri-color 2 year old mini. She's short and stocky at about 35lbs with an endless resource of love and kisses. She is is a quiet girl who is shy initially, but warms up easily.

She's doing great with the foster home's resident cat and other pups. She doesn't actively play with any of the other dogs, but shows curiosity when she sees the resident pups at play. She's low on the energy scale and high on the velcro scale. She is her foster mom's fluffy shadow - she will lay quietly by her feet or next to her on the couch and will go from room to room with her to keep her company. At night she likes to lay under her foster mom's bed to keep a watch out for dust bunnies with occasional breaks to check-in or jump on the bed to give a quick snuggle before resuming her under-bed post. She is more reserved with men but she warmed up to her foster dad overnight. She did well with the visiting 6 year old, so a home with kids should be okay. She is housebroken and crate trained. She considers the crate her "safe space" and will go in there on her own when she wants a quiet space to hide out in. She is interested in toys but is still figuring out how to play with them. She seems to walk well on a leash and doesn't care to chase the squirrels she sees on her walks but she does get startled with loud noises. She does fine after some reassurance.
he has a healthy appetite and will try to sneak extra treats if you let her. A quick "no" or "uh-uh" does the trick if she tries to counter surf (not that she can reach the tops of counters!). If you're looking for a sweet, loving ball of fur who wants nothing else but to be with her human then you've found the right companion in Ellie.

Jelly Belly is fostered in Brick, NJ

Squash

Squash is a 2 year old 42# blue merle with one blue eye and one brown.  He is a low key, happy boy that likes nothing better than to be with his person.

Squash is leaning that his meals come to him on the floor, not on the counter!.  And that's where problems with this dog ends.  He is excellent riding in the car, walks well on a leash, doesn't bark much and has excellent recall. He does like to make sure everyone has finished their meal, but with a simple no, he waits to inspect the bowl for crumbs. He is safe in the house and quite the bed hog, but with one look at this face, he is forgiven for stealing the bed.

Smart, and high Velcro, you will have a friend, companion and car navigator for whatever adventure you partake.

Squash is fostered in Spring Grove, PA

Daisee

Daisee is a 2 year old 44lbs red merle. She seems shy at first, but once you earn her trust, she will show her sweet and loving personality.

Daisee is not your typical Aussie, as she enjoys napping more than anything. She is happiest when she can spend time with the humans around her. She walks well on a leash and enjoys looking out the window during car rides. She is very well mannered, does not beg for food, and is housebroken. She has met quite a few dogs and it seems like she gets along with everyone. She enjoys watching other dogs play, but has not shown any interested in participating herself. She is a sweetheart around children, but knows her boundaries as well - just know that she loves to give kisses.

Daisee is not a big fan of the kennel, which she is currently working on. She has not shown any signs of destructiveness when roaming the house. She is also working on basic obedience (sit, stay, etc); she is pretty smart, so there is no doubt that she will catch up quickly.

Daisee is fostered in Brandywine, MD
